Black pepper essensial oil is extracted by CO2 under Select Extract condition, that are typically at low pressures and temperature. Selective extracts typically contain more volatile CO2 soluble components with molecules that range from C5 to C25. Heavier waxes, resins and color compounds are typically not included in CO2 Selects. These extracts are somewhat similar to steam-distilled essential oils in composition and beneficial applications, however, they often provide more volatile components that cannot be extracted by steam distillation. Therefore, CO2 Select Extract often has an aroma closer to the aroma of natural herbs than steam-distilled essential oils.
